How the height prediction works
The predictor uses the mid-parental height formula (Tanner method), the standard clinical estimate:
- Boy: (father's height + mother's height + 13) ÷ 2 cm
- Girl: (father's height + mother's height − 13) ÷ 2 cm
Most children end up within ±8 cm of this estimate, so the result is shown as a range. Genetics explain roughly 80% of height; nutrition, sleep, exercise, and health during childhood and puberty account for most of the rest.
Converter: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, and 1 foot = 12 inches (30.48 cm) — the converter applies these exact factors both ways.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the mid-parental height formula?
It is a solid estimate: most children end up within ±8 cm of the predicted height. It explains the genetic contribution well but cannot account for nutrition, health, or individual variation.
Can I use this calculator for teenagers?
Yes, but it is most informative for younger children. Teenagers near the end of puberty are already close to their final height, so the prediction adds less new information.
Does nutrition affect a child's final height?
Yes. Genetics account for roughly 80% of height, but adequate nutrition, sleep, exercise, and overall health during childhood and puberty influence whether a child reaches their full genetic potential.
Why is there an 8 cm range around the prediction?
Height is influenced by many genes from both sides of the family, not just the parents' own heights. The ±8 cm range covers the typical spread seen in clinical studies of the Tanner mid-parental method.
